Ozone in Public Swimming Pools

In public pools, ozone is best used as a supplemental treatment system alongside the primary disinfectant, not as a stand-alone replacement. Public facilities have higher bather loads, greater contaminant input, and stricter operational demands, so ozone is typically integrated into the circulation and treatment loop after filtration to improve overall water quality and reduce combined chlorine and other organics. CDC’s Model Aquatic Health Code treats ozone and UV as secondary or supplemental systems used in addition to standard disinfection, and specifies that these systems are installed in the treatment loop, post-filtration.

When properly applied, ozone helps oxidize organic contaminants, improve water clarity, and support better air and water quality by reducing chloramine formation. This can be especially valuable in indoor public pools, therapy pools, and other high-use aquatic venues where water quality and user comfort are major concerns. Because ozone systems are circulation-dependent, they are most effective when integrated into a well-designed treatment system with proper flow, contact time, and continued primary sanitizer control.

Ozone in Private Swimming Pools

In properly designed private pools, ozone can serve as the primary water treatment agent by providing both strong oxidation and a measurable residual in the pool water. Unlike UV, which only treats water as it passes through the chamber and leaves no lasting residual, ozone remains active in the water long enough to continue working throughout the system when the equipment is correctly sized and integrated.

For private pool owners, this means cleaner water, reduced dependence on traditional chemicals, improved clarity, and better control of organic contamination. Ozone also eliminates chloramine-related odor and irritation while supporting a more comfortable swimming environment.

Successful use depends on proper sizing, good circulation, effective gas transfer, and maintaining the correct oxidation level in the pool. When engineered correctly, ozone provides private pools with a powerful, reliable treatment method that goes beyond point-of-contact treatment and continues working in the water itself.
